It's a SALES PITCH. A simple, reliable, easily digestable slogan to
introduce the CRM concept, and a simple, powerful way to re-focus the
various components when the crew begins to lose sight of the forest.
You don't go swimming alone. Firefighters never enter a burning building
alone. SWAT Teams operate in pairs. Medical teams, at their most
elemental - a doctor and a nurse - are paired. And for pilots, in the
immortal words of Tom "Maverick" Cruise "You never leave your wingman."
CRM is about HOW the pieces fit together. The Buddy System slogan is about
making it painfully obvious that CRM is in fact good for everyone, even
those crusty, thick-skulled rouge pilots (or controllers, or anyone else).
