One of the more timely phrases I teach students to consider is one I got
from a story of a major airline crew. The crew was approaching Denver's
Stapleton airport, and a wind report, during the final approach, indicated a
tailwind. The captain, who was flying, asked the copilot "Is this legal?"
The copilot quickly re-calculated the wind effect on landing performance and
said "No, we're out of limits." The captain immediately directed a
missed-approach and changed runways.
The flying organization I work with has gone through (too) many years of
turmoil in their policy and regulations. The effects are ignorance and
apathy, of and toward regulations. So, as a phrase to get the crews to take
a second look at their behavior, and hopefully check their situational
awareness, I teach them to ask "Is this legal?"
It really gets one to at least pause and think for a moment.
