Basic Training

I just came from a planning session in which another airline's tape was
reviewed. It was quite a revelation that some people see CRM as something
that can be taught in a short tape by a non pilot to a pilot group. I
actually thought the tape was a parody-a Saturday Night Live type of humor.
After all humor is a great tool in training. But not so. I think the
thing that bugs me the most about this particular tape is that it must have
turned off every pilot in the class. If a course is going to be accepted
it needs to address issues that the individual can identify as relevant.
Having crewmembers teach crewmembers helps. The creditability of the
facilitator is basic to success.

The other thing that jumps out at me after this experience is that we are
not delivering a product that is consistent across the industry. There are
some major differences in how CRM is actually presented.
