As Neil said, up to now checklist design was left up to the engineers.
Sometimes the layout is not very good. E.g. in the B737 quick reference
handbook, the notes referring to a checklist item are below the item, but
should be read before executing the action. Resulting in pilots executing an
action and then reading they should not have done it ...

But the best example I know is in the BAe146 non-normal checklist:
Is the bus off light not extinguished? Yes (procedure A) No (procedure B).

Try to figure that out quickly ....
