As a pilot, I retired at 60, in 1991 after 25,300 hours of flying time and
then I continued working with the Airlines five more years as Director of
Operations.
According to what I have seen during my years in Aviation, the most
difficult thing for a pilot to learn is to say always NO when put in a
situation to press on. That is specially true in small companies or under
times of crisis.
I tell the F/Os and young Captains that they will only be a true professional
the day they learn to say NO to any kind of pressure that can make them to
deviate from what they know that has to be done for a SAFE and efficient
operation. Unfortunately, some pilots never learn this thing that, on the
other hand, should be teached and made very clear at an early stage of a
pilot's career,
