Robin,
Yesterday we delivered our first training session on CRM for
construction. It was very well received and will be the foundation for
all future efforts in the industry.
We call the program Site Sense and it is primarily focused on Crew
Formation, Communication and Site Awareness skills necessary for very
large commercial contractors (heavy highway, heavy commercial, general,
etc.) to improve safety and productivity. We plan on expanding the
scope to the Decision Making process, Error Recognition/Error Trapping
and more as soon as the initial training has been completed. Many of
the concepts are not given the time we would like (especially compared
to aviation) because the initial training is delivered in a 4-5 hour
session.
An extensive period of site visits and development proceeded the
effort. We drew heavily on the fact that the operational environments
for flight crews and construction crews were remarkably similar (danger,
distractions, finality of poor decisions, etc.). Construction personnel
reacted very favorably to the comparisons.
We worked with four major contractors and a large insurance company on
the project and their cooperation and enthusiasm for the project was
amazing! There are direct applications for other industries.
