I've been doing CRM training for the shipping industry for some years,
both introductory training and more recently LOFT-type training (LOST?)
in ship maneuvering simulators. Our data shows clearly that seamen find
this kind of training very useful, especially the CRM-focused debriefs
on simulation exercises.
But - as the current discussion on CRM measurement clearly shows - in
order to state that the training really works, we need more data. It is
an enormous challenge to develop ways to measure CRM-performance in the
maritime environment. Luckily - "indirect" data, such as the number of
incidents leading to minor damage, seems to suggest that the training
does work.
My experience is not strictly from the petro-chemical environment, but
please contact me directly if you want to discuss further.
Best regards
Jens
