> I believe you have to have a safety valve for those rare cases where
people choose to not get along.<
Gerry,
I agree with your insight, but the operative word in your remark is
"choose". As an officer with ALPA, Line Capt, & CRM Facilitator, I know
exactly what you mean and there does seem to be some merit in your
suggestion; however (you knew it was coming), at least at our airline, Mgmt
has made it very clear they will NOT put up with this possibility. Instead
they call in the "Fix It Folks" -- the CRM Committee. I've been somewhat,
if not downright, outspoken against being tasked with the personality
clashes on the flight deck. You, as a member of Pro Stds, are intimately
familiar with these situations and they are less than an enjoyable endeavor
and do pose a certain safety risk.
What's the answer? I don't know. When pushed to go this "extra" mile we
(CRM) do our best, but I still don't like it. There are people I don't
like to fly with. I guess as Capt., I'm in a better position to set
whatever tone I deem appropriate for the given pairing -- hopefully I won't
(and I think I haven't) set overselves up for a disastrous trip just
because I don't particularly care for someone.
