A few comments about the thread on videos, since it seems to be drawing to
a close. First, thanks to all those who expressed opinions or shared
their favourites. This is valuable information in its own right and helps
develop a sense of industry perspective and best practice.
One of the things that I found interesting was the depth of disagreement
about some videos or training approaches. The Riyadh video was on the
Karlin and Koh top 20 and I'd had good reviews about it (in terms of
accident chain and decision-making under stress). But the views here were
widely and strongly negative. This suggests that we still don't have
generally-accepted industry guidelines about criteria for evaluating
training resources for specific CRM applications. Perhaps this might be a
topic of useful research for Maureen Petit to fund, following in the
footsteps of Key Dismuke's LOFT debrief analysis and Instructor Manual.
I've left the Riyadh video listing in the HFG's CRM Resource database, but
deleted it's rating and added a note warning that opinions about its
realism, authenticity and instructional value differ markedly - it should
be viewed first and used in part, if at all. However it is now possible to
get an official copy for a reasonable price from Granada TV.
On this point, intellectual property rights, Ken said:
>>>films that are commercial state that they cannot be
duplicated/reproduced in part or total <<<
IPR is a difficult topic but some uses of copyright material may not
infringe copyright at all and many would be practically unenforceable in
law. The best guideline I've found is simply decency and respect. The CRM
video database lists IPR owner and author (if known) as well as who has a
reference copy.
Thanks to all those who listed favourites, and with your permission I will
include those titles I don't have in the database.
