To all,
CRM videos do have a place in training but there are some disadvantages that
I see.
"Smoke and Fire" videos (my term) have a tendency to disconnect from the
audience. Sure they watch them, but the uniqueness may be the hook point,
not the content. And yes they do say, "what a bunch of errors" or whatever.
But many aviators, like anybody else, think: that's not me, not my unit, not
my culture...there is a disconnect. People will construct protective
barriers to seperate themselves from the disaster at hand. That is where the
problem arises. Fear can only produce short term behavior changes..like
about a minute. In my 22 years as a C-5 Flight Engineer, I never saw a crew
in an emergency say "Oh yeah, what happened in that video we saw last year?"
Don't get me wrong videos are great tools up to a point and specifically
they can make a point real clear when supplemental to a good CRM facilitator.
I've seen them all. And I've seen the reaction of the audiences, shaking
their heads in disbelief only to engage in the same behavior themselves some
time in the future. I like the positive CRM outcome videos: CRM narrated by
John Nance and the old: MAC 249 What Are Your Intentions? Just a thought!
