I generally agree with the idea of using positive videos to show the value of
good CRM, but I think there is a very definite place for showing mishp
videos. When presented appropriately, they are very real to crew members. In
spite of the fact that many will appear to distance themselves from the
mishap (can't happen to me), my experience is that everyone pays attention to
mishaps...especially if there were fatalities. I believe there are keys to
presenting these videos. First, presentation of the mishap must be
factual...a good facilitator will set ground rules for discussing hearsay.
Second, the crews (trainees?) must participate in analysis of the mishap and
present potential chain breaking alternatives. Last, crew must form a
concept of proactive prevention. After facilitating discussion of a mishap,
I used to tell crews that the mishap was only the second worst thing that
could occur...a repretition of the same mishap is worse.
