On 10/24, Neil asked for some additional info on the SAE G-10 Committee.
Here are his questions and my brief response:

1. What is the mission of the G-10 committee?

This is a very big question so I will try to paraphrase some of the
information that I've seen in print recently.

The G-10 committee is one of the many SAE (Society of Automotive Engineers)
committees which provides various federal, state, and local governments with
vital technical information. As a scientific and educational institution,
SAE is prohibited from lobbying or otherwise directly influencing
legislation. However, SAE does develop technical opinions or provide
technical input to various government agencies on subjects that affect the
mobility community.

SAE provides proactive support to the regulatory process on both the domestic
and international levels. Its technical standards program provides a
consensus approach to meeting the needs of both industry and government.

For many years, the FAA has requested that SAE develop standards which could
be converted to Technical Standard Orders (TSO). Once approved through the
SAE consensus process, these documents are forwarded to FAA for adoption.
Some have also been sent to the Joint Airworthiness Authority which will
influence worldwide aircraft operations.

The FAA Human Factors Team Report, published in July 96, made 51
recommendations across 8 specific areas of concern. There were three
co-chairpersons for the HF Team and one was Dr. Kathy Abbott of NASA Langley
(k.h.abbott_at_larc.nasa.gov). Expert technical advisors for this Team by the
way were Dr. Nadine Sarter (Univ of Illinois), Dr. David Woods (Ohio State
University), and Dr. Robert Hemreich (University of Texas). If you haven't
seen this report yet, I highly recommend a visit to the FAA home page on the
Internet and a download. It is excellent.

The G-10 sub committees on automation and training which are responding to
the HF Team Report have representatives from the FAA HF team, Boeing, Airbus,
ALPA, FAA Certification, FAA Stardarization, plus other interested industry
members (airlines, component manufacturers, training vendors, etc).

2. Is this standardization specific to automation issues or a more general
look at CRM requirements?

The specific target areas for the G-10 sub-committees are: (1)
flightcrew-centered design guidelines; (2) manaqement and use of automation;
(3) flightcrew situation awareness; (4) basic airmanship; and (5) CRM. The
product of this effort will be a series of ARDs and ARPs addressing these
areas. Therefore, there seem to be some very good reasons for the folks on
this B-B to also be involved with the G-10 activities.

3. Who are the contacts for the G-10 Committee?

The G-10 Chairman is Captain C.W. "Bill" Connor, Ph.D. His contact info is:

206 Elm Avenue
Melbourne Beach, FL 32951
Tel: 407-952-0339
