I just finished creating a video that focuses on building instructor debrief
skill. The work was based on the LOFT debrief research done by Dr. Key Dismukes
from NASA. In fact, Key worked with us to shape the script for this video.
The video highlights an instructor and two crew members conducting a debrief.
We show the video segments to the class twice. The first time there are no
subscripts highlighting instructor debrief performance. Once we show the video,
we facilitate a discussion with the instructors focusing on the techniques and
skills they saw the instructor exhibit. The second run through the video has
subscripts that highlight the skill when it is happening in the video.
The world premier was a couple days ago when I used it in a new instructor LOS
workshop. It was very well received. I will be using it during the annual
instructor training that starts in a couple weeks. We will be making
refinements based on our feedback from instructors.
Since we drew very heavily from the NASA Ames work of Dr. Dismukes, we hope to
make a convincing argument for making the tape available to the entire industry.
If we cannot release the tape in its existing form, we may work with the folks
at NASA to create a version that can be released as a public domain video.
Everyone will be able to see this video during Ohio State Conference (assuming
our panel abstract is accepted). Hopefully by that time we will have a video
copy that is releasable. The panel will focus on industry / research
collaboration that results in a airline training product. We will chronicle our
experience gained while collaborating with Dr. Dismukes to first shape the
research effort then how we translated the findings into a training program.
The panel will conclude with the training video being delivered by one of
Delta's Flight Instructors.
By the way, Guy Smith and Tony Sasso at Northwest have done some cutting-edge
work on instructor debrief training.
