I understand the problems that you encounter for student pilots training in
single pilot aircraft. In preparation for solo, IP's want to see the person
conduct themselves without "relying" on the IP in the other seat. The focus
is to give the person confidence that he/she can go it alone. What we try
to instill is that they are not alone. There are still many sources of
information and guidance, some mandatory ( i.e.. tower controllers or
communicating with other aircraft at uncontrolled fields), others are there
to help and include operations or FSS. The pilot must be able to effective
communicate, manage the workload, deal with stresses, and make appropriate
decisions.
We start educating the individual about CRM before they step into an
airplane and continue with lessons that are appropriate to their phase of
development. We start with the general concepts and then focus on mission
specific as they progress through training. Team building exercises, class
facilitation, simulator line oriented flying sessions, and initially even
lecture has a place. Our training is taught by aerospace physiologists,
contract instructors, and military instructor pilots. I hope this
information is of some help. We are and I believe always will be in a
learning phase on how best to train/instill CRM in our pilots. Call or
E-mail if I can answer any questions. I am interested in your approach to
CRM at this level.
