*** Asiana 747-400 clips parked Aeroflot IL-62M
Asiana Flight 221 from JFK to SEL via ANC was halted in its
tracks last night when the Asiana 747-400 wing sliced into a
parked Aeroflot IL-62M at Anchorage International Airport.
The 747-400 carried 220 passengers and a crew of 18. The 30
year old, long-distance transport was empty except for the
flight crew. The aging IL-62M airliner, similar to the
four-engine, tail-mounted, British Vickers VC-10, is being
replace by the A-310 and B-767 aircraft. There were no
reported injuries, although there was understandable concern
expressed when fuel drained from the 747 wing. Both aircraft
sustained significant damage when the 747 collided with the tail
of the parked IL-62M as it was taxing to the active runway around
0130L AST. The number one engine of the Asiana Flight was also
damaged during the mishap. Steering difficulties may have been
encountered by the Asiana flight crew with Anchorage's first
snowfall of the season. Airport officials reported that most of
the 3-inch snowfall had been removed from the ramp and taxiway
before the accident. NTSB officials are looking into possibility
of a mechanical failure in addition to the weather related
