Dick,
At Embry-Riddle Aero. Univ., I teach a graduate course in CRM. Nearly
all the students are pilots, but most of them have little or no
turbine time, and little or no crew experience. I have them develop
and administer a LOFT to their fellow students. We use a B-727
Cockpit Procedures Trainer, with an experienced Second Officer to
handle the aircraft systems. I do a fam. session with each student in
the CPT prior to them writing the LOFT, and instruct them to us the
CRM principles we've discussed in class. Since the 727 CPT doesn't
fly, distractions from "flight" do not distract from the conduct of
the LOFT, and what I call the "gee-whiz" factor - their first exposure
to a jet - is minimized.
After completing the course, most students tell me that the LOFT was
the most valuable portion of the course. We videotape them, and use
the tapes as a tool to discuss the actual applications of CRM
concepts.
Regards,
Ted Beneigh

To CRMers,
At Ohio State, we are developing a transfer of training experiment in which
we teach problem solving to pilots. We will test their change in behavior in
a LOFT scenario in a flight simulator. We are looking for ideas for
assessing specific behaviors during these scenarios. I know that most
airlines use checklists to grade pilot performance on checks. If anyone is
using a checklist that has CRM or decision making markers, and is willing to
share it with us, I would like to hear from you.
Also if anyone has other ideas on the assessment of decison making
performance during LOFT scenarios, please let me know.
Thanks ahead of time.
