You might like to get in touch with Robert Taylor (rmtaylor_at_taz.dra.hmg.gb) at
the Center for Human Sciences at Farnborough. They have been doing quite a
lot of work on mission planning. One of their conclusions - that may spark a
little controversy - is that highly immersive mission planning environments
may produce a cognitive rigidity that will cause crews to continue with a plan
even after the circumstances have changed (the strategy persistence bias).
One might draw the conclusion that some mission planning is benificial but too
much is not good. Where the boundary lies is uncertain. Perhaps part of
mission planning should be to introduce unexpected events (just like the real
world).

To all,
My name is Kevin Howell and I'm a graduate student at Oklahoma State working
on an aviation degree. I'm interested in researching the affects of mission
planning to aid in Situation Awarenss. I'm an AWACS crew member and know
this as fact, but am having difficulty finding peer reviewed articles to back
