My doctoral dissertation focused on how fighter pilots build situational
awareness during mission planning. All the material will apply directly to
the AWACS mission. The dissertation was an analysis of pilot information
requirements during mission planning. I began writing the dissertation
while I was an operational F-4 Wild Weasel pilot. I collected a fair
amount of field data while I was flying during Desert Storm so it has both
a peacetime and a wartime perspective. The primary product of the
dissertation was a model for a pre-mission planning information system. A
synopsis of the dissertation is available from CSERIAC in the conference
proceedings from the Naval Warfare Center's First Conference on Situation
Awareness in Tactical Environments or on my web site. I think you will
find the list of findings, hypotheses, and references particularly useful.
