I'm Paul Sherman, a doctoral student working with Dr. Helmreich at
UT-Austin. We're currently engaged in surveying pilots of automated a/c
regarding their views and use of the automation -- we've included sections
that measure their satisfaction with both transition and recurrent training,
their perceptions of the systems and modes they use in regular line flying,
and their overall resource management attitudes. This survey was constructed
in close coordination with Dr. Earl Wiener and two Delta line pilots who
have substantial research experience.
The survey has been road tested; we've administered it at one major domestic
airline with substantial operations in Latin and South America; we're
presently analyzing the returns. Their equipment is mostly Douglas and
Boeing; we would love to get responses from Airbus drivers to add to our
