'The High and the Mighty' movie was based on a book by Ernest K Gann, a
potboiler, really, not his best. Gann's real masterpiece is 'Fate is the
Hunter'. It's brilliant, and if it could be got back into production,
Neil, it would be a worthy addition to the Bookshelf. I've just re-read
it. One curious observation is that, in telling about or referring to
the hundreds of pilots he'd known, or known of, who died while 'flying
the line', Gann only twice mentions passengers, our clients, and in
passing, at that. Another point to reflect on is the mental toughness
the pilots of his generation needed - and were trained to achieve.
