I found this disturbing at the time, as UAL was very much a leader in
implemeting CLR (CRM) after our accident at PDX.
All the ratings given (to my knowlege) used the concept that the PNF would
do ONLY what he was instructed to do by the rating candidate. He was NOT
to give any un-asked for assistance of ANY kind.
(If the PF did not specfically ask for something (like pulling up the
gear), the PNF WAS PROHIBITED from pointing out the omission!)
I don't know if this is still in effect, but I believe that this is the
standard way that that the FAA (STILL) conducts all ratings on all US
airlines.
