I believe the movie you are referring to is "The High and the Mighty."
If this is indeed the one you mean, John Wayne begins the movie as the
first officer to the Captain, played by Robert Stack, on a passenger
flight from SFO to HNL. They develop engine problems, must return, and
then the poor CRM occurs, exemplified most notably by the scene in which
Wayne slaps the hysterical Captain Stack.
