Larry;
In my experience in LOFT and on the line I have observed that when the
"boss" is hand flying the F/O is at times reluctant to tell him he's not
doing a good job. This obviuosly depands on the experience level of the
F/O. The more experienced they are the less reluctant and more assertive
they are. The F/O may feel that since the 'boss" has all this experience he
doesn't have to cross-check whats he does. The other factor is that for
some reason some captains insist on finding something for the F/O to do
during the approach which takes the F/O away from his primary task of
monitoring the approach. This is primarily due to a lack of understanding
of workload management and situational awareness. We are very concerned
about this last point since it seems to be very dominant in our debriefs.
Hope this helps.
