Thanks for your message, Pete. My original post probably wasn't sufficiently
clear. I'm aware of most of the experiences with the current 121 HUD users.
They have well established training programs and HUD proficiency is part of
their initial and recurrent. The problem I'm starting to deal with during
certification flight test is the migration of advanced technologies (like but
not necessarily limited to HUD) into operations that (1) aren't required by
reg to have their pilots demonstrate a specific proficiency with such
technologies and (2) whose pilots probably aren't as experienced as 121 pilots
to begin with. Basically, the cost of these advanced technologies is dropping
rapidly and the potential market is widening. Whether or not we need more
regs is not my interest. How the migration of such technologies is being
addressed by non-121 operations, however, is of interest to me because it
affects the way I view a proposed implementation. Perhaps it's too early to
see anything happening in the marketplace yet but it's coming. I was simply
asking if anyone has seen indications of this migration yet in any type of
aircraft operation other than 121 and, if so, what issues may have surfaced.
Thanks again for your thoughtful comments. Best Regards, Bob Barnes
