As a "Behavior Modification" trained clinician for some thirty years now it's
amazing that this term still elicits such a reaction. Not just aviators
respond adversly to it everyone does. "Behavior Modification" was dropped
from the psychbabble cpommunity in the late 70's. Replaced by behavior
management, contengiency training and reiforcement application...whatever it
still has the core of element of arranging the environment (consequences) to
provide positive reinforcement for appropriate responses. Now comes CRM.
Who is not interested in any crew making correct responses in any situation.
Trouble errupts when crew members make responses based on who's right (by
cultural definitions.PIC, older, higher rank etc) rather than What's RIGHT.
And it's been that way for decades. And aircraft crew encounter the same
issues every time they fly. If crew skills were where they need to be: zero
accidents we would all be flying the line. All training is behavior
maodification. The desired outcome determines if it's brainwashing. CRM/ACT
was never meant to be hand-holding psychobabble it's just that in it's early
days there was NO professional approach that could do the job. This group
and others ardeveloping that area of professional focus to manage human
errors. We have no choice but to continue. Have Fun Fly Safe
