Now for a real answer--
That's a good question--What is CRM? I try to approach it with two
thoughts:
1. CRM is a Process, and you can not not be doing it. You can be doing
it well, and poorly, but when there is team function, there is CRM in action.
It is not only associated with aviation--the concepts and teachings apply to
non-aviation environments.
2.. There is a language of CRM. Teaching it requires several stages,
beginning with an awareness, and ending with fluency. The achievement of
fluency is a goal that is being elevated by Bob Helmriech's "vision" of the
fifth generation.
To teach a language requires vocabulary, terms, settings, behaviors,
conditions, discipline, support, practic, etc, etc. etc. Many CRM programs
approach this with terms and concepts such as "situational awareness,
communication, decision-making, leadership/followership", etc. etc. Some
programs use tools to enhance the process, such as acronyms, "buzz-words",
standard phrasealogy. If the tools are standardized, the "language" catches
on, the CRM evolves.
Just as you can not not communicate, neither can a team effort exist
without the process of teamwork--and that's one idea of what CRM is.
And that's the philosophy for the weekend. This ought to be a good round.
