When to follow

I have been reading the thread on leadership/ followership with some
interest. In refelecting on how I actually operate in the aluminum
overcast, I realized that the PIC does not always lead. Quite often the
PIC(pilot in command)chooses to follow the lead of the SIC. Such a
decision can be quite deliberate as in training or electing to let the
other pilot have a particular experience, or it can be almost subconscious
as in just passively going along with a particular technique. Is there any
research out there on how and why designated leaders choose to follow?
