I am posting my reply rather than sending it privately because i am
interested in the same question and hope someone may have some data they
will post. Unfortunately, i suspect the experiment you have mentioned has
never been done--in part because it would be expensive and difficult to
design correctly.
I have two suggestions that might help indirectly: (i) Seven years ago
Hart Langer, then VP of ops at UAL gave a talk in which he recounted two
UAL accidents from mechanical failures in which the crews' CRM training
greatly alleviated the outcome and stated (his opinion, of course) that CRM
training had saved many lives. I do not have an electronic copy but could
send you a paper copy if you send me your mailing address. (ii) Bob
Helmreich's research group at the Univ of Texas collects longitudinal data
on crew performance on crm and tech performance in line audits. He or
John Wilheim in his group might be able to tell you something about
improvement of performance on the line after introduction of crm/loft
training.
