As I recall the F-4 had a g limit of 8.33 clean and lower limits with
stores. The locker room lore however was that the beast would go to 10-11
g before the engine mounting bolts broke. Some flew home with broken
mounting bolts. Before you jump to the conclusion that people saved their
bacon pulling harder to out turn a nominally better turning plane, remember
that most of the over g situations in the F-4 occured during mach tuck
where the stab got suddenly more effective as the plane decelerated from
supersonic to subsonic. FBW could have solved that problem.
