Kuhn (1970) and Gardner (1982) described paradigm shift and attitude during
scientific revolutions - specifically resistance to paradigm shift and its
causes. Paradigm shift can be described in the language of attitude
change. e.g. change may be better-tolerated by the young than the old
since they are less heavily invested in the existing paradigm. Again, an
established principle of Social Psychology anticipated Helmreich and
Wilhelm's (1989) Boomerang effect, described in a paper titled Negative
outcomes associated with cockpit resource management programmes. Bowers
(1993) comments Interestingly, it appeared that the subset most at risk
for this paradoxical effect are the pilots in greatest need of attitude
enhancement.
Coping with this problem evokes a variety of strategies, but I liked Aer
Lingus' - a series of short humerous video vignettes on CRM topics, during
which the Captain - a boomerang effect if there ever was one - becomes
progressively less sane.
