People Express was bought by Continental Airlines in 1986, after, among other
things, buying the failing Frontier Airlines, butting heads with the major
airlines, and expanding too fast. In theory, they had a "people" first
philosophy regarding customer service and crewmembers(although that didn't
exactly translate into high wages, benefits, etc.) They also had started a
CRM program just prior to their being bought. They tried to be a "no-frills"
airline, patterned after Southwest, but, in the end, it's management didn't
have the savvy that Southwest obvious has had. They were, however, a fun
place to fly, thanks to a first-rate crew force that frequently went beyond
the call of duty to try to help customers and the airline survive. Mike Sasse
