Flight 420 took off from Montreal Dorval Runway 06R at 07.01h for a
flight
to Peterborough. The plane was radar vectored to the airway system when,
at
07.10h, a crew member reported to the Montreal ACC that they were
experiencing a hydraulic failure. Shortly thereafter (at 07.20h) the
crew
declared a fire in the number one engine. The plane was vectored to
Montreal-Mirabel Runway 24, since Mirabel was the airport closest by.
The
aircraft was observed fast on final approach with fire coming out of the
left (no.1) engine and left wing, brushing the fuselage. The flight
landed
on runway 24, decelerated for about 2000 feet then departed the runway
loosing the left wing then the left engine to hit a trench before it
flipped over to finaly explode. The plane came to rest 65m left of the
runway. The weather at the time was IMC and the ceiling was 300 feet
overcast.
