||| >>> Editorial: Pulling In New Pilots - - - <<< |||
---------------------------------------------------------------------
by Craig Peyton
As the new century is a mere 3 years off, many of us in the pilot
community have been asking ourselves, "what is flying going to be like
in the year 2000"? Without major changes, the quick answer might be;
about the same as now, just more expensive. With the good news of
congress getting the trial lawyers off our backs, we now look forward
to a new generation of flying machines that can ignite some new energy
into GA.
The problem is who is going to buy the next generation of aircraft?
Join us online to read more of Mr. Peyton's thought evoking editorial...

Commission gets an earful on user fees: By CHARLES SPENCE
WASHINGTON, DC - While representatives of the nation's seven largest
airlines continued to push for a user-fee system, expert witnesses at the
National Civil Aviation Review Commission's first public hearing testified
here May 28 that replacing excise taxes would reduce aviation safety, would
prove to be cumbersome and expensive to collect, and clearly is not a wise
option for financing the air traffic control system.
The testimony apparently proved effective. A few days after the public
hearing, commission staff proposed retaining excise taxes on fuel,
directing tax collections into the aviation trust fund, and linking some
money to FAA expenditures, as proposed by the Aircraft Owners and Pilots
Association ...

Hartzell AD would affect thousands of props: By DAVE HIGDON
PIQUAY, Ohio - Operators of aircraft equipped with Hartzell's older
constant-speed props are well acquainted with four airworthiness directives
that are designed to reduce the potential for prop failures by mandating
repetitive inspections.
A wider array of Hartzell fliers were recently hit with a service bulletin
that expands the number of aircraft covered, adds inspection requirements,
shortens some hub-inspection intervals to as few as 250 hours, and sets the
time between overhauls to a maximum of five years, regardless of hours
flown.
And now the pool of affected pilots may grow larger...

Aviation Law Forum by Phillip J. Kolczynski.
Are you an expert in some facet of aviation?
Don't be humble - the federal and state courts are very liberal in allowing
people to testify as experts. The aspiring expert must have some special
skill or experience which can help juries understand an aviation case.
While advanced degrees are helpful, they are not a prerequisite. Your
expertise and ability to explain complicated aviation subjects is what
counts the most. See Phil Kolczynski's In depth article - "How To Be A
Successful Aviation Expert Witness"
designed to highlight tips for experts in aviation and related fields, who
may be retained by attorneys to assist with analyzing and presenting a client's
case.

Good Luck Mr. Gorsky
When Apollo Mission Astronaut Neil Armstrong first walked on the
moon, he not only gave his famous "one small step for man, one giant
leap for mankind" statement but followed it by several remarks, usual
com traffic between him, the other astronauts and Mission Control.
Just before he re-entered the lander, however, he made the enigmatic
remark "Good luck Mr. Gorsky."
Many people at NASA thought it was a casual remark concerning some
rival Soviet Cosmonaut. However, upon checking, there was no Gorsky
in either the Russian or American space programs. Over the years many
people questioned Armstrong as to what the "Good luck Mr. Gorsky"
statement meant, but Armstrong always just smiled.
On July 5, 1995 (in Tampa Bay FL) while answering
questions following a speech, a reporter brought up the 26 year old
question to Armstrong. This time he finally responded. Mr. Gorsky
had finally died and so Neil Armstrong felt he could answer the
question.
When he was a kid, he was playing baseball with a friend in the
backyard. His friend hit a fly ball which landed in the front of
his neighbor's bedroom windows. His neighbors were Mr. & Mrs.
Gorsky. As he leaned down to pick up the ball, young Armstrong heard
Mrs. Gorsky shouting at Mr. Gorsky, "Oral sex! You want oral sex?!
You'll get oral sex when the kid next door walks on the moon!"
True story.

||| >>> WEB KNOW-HOW - - - - - - - - <<< |||
---------------------------------------------------------------------
We are often asked what is the difference between "hits", "page counts",
"unique hosts", and true "visitor counts". So here is the full story:
PAGE COUNTS: when you connect to a web site you are requesting a specific
web page, which results in one page count (when the site includes frames,
each frame is a separate page and counts as such).
HIT COUNTS: by far the most used number and the least useful: when you
request a page each element on the page generate a hit count. If the page
contains 10 images (elements) this page request produces 11 hits (10 hits
for the images + 1 hit for the page itself). Many web-sites try to
capitalize on this hit count by generating as many hits as possible for
each page request. As a user you'll see that your browser will make many
connections to the server even though you have requested just one page.
The downside: you wait longer, and the resulting hit count has little to do
with the true number of visitors to the site.
UNIQUE HOSTS: when you make a request to an Internet server your request is
tagged with a "unique host ID". This ID is an IP address (Internet
Address) that represents the gateway that you have used to connect with the
Internet. This gateway can identify a single computer (the no-sharing
case) or it can identify a complete network (the shared-gateway case).
Often when you connect to the Internet through AOL or Compuserve or many
other large companies (such as Boeing) your connection is represented using
a single shared gateway address. Thus, the same gateway ID that you
present to the server is also the same ID that many others who share this
gateway present (in many cases there are tens of thousands of users sharing
the same "unique host ID" making this ID useless in trying to determine how
many users actually arrived from this gateway).
VISITOR COUNTS: each visitor receives a unique ID no matter which gateway
they arrived from or how many users share a given gateway. This is the
best and most accurate count of actual users to a web site. It provides a
true and accurate visitor count - counting each live person as a single
visitor while ignoring the by products of this visit (i.e hit counts, page
counts, etc.). An increasing number of sites on the Internet provide this
measure (Landings is one of them).
