One approach is to do an intervention along the lines of an alcoholic
intervention. The end game is to have a mental health evaluation. In such
interventions you need to gather as many concerned people as possible to
confront the pilot with his alleged problem. This should include family,
crewmembers, union leaders, trainers, and management. The assembled group
carefully prepares to confront the individual with hard facts about his
behaviour. Hopefully he or she will agree to seek help. It is a risky
business since the pilot may reject help and the next step is probably
forced retirement or termination.
