Chris, perhaps some more details will help the group thinking on your
captain.
I would be interested in his position in the organization, his relation
with the
bosses (how close or friend he is).
Is he a "LtCol Holland (B52)" like pilot in his organization,
as was outstandingly described by Tony Kern?
Also the history and operational culture of the organization, etc. etc.
