Howdy,
Let me put in my thoughts on PC technolgy: I believe there is far
too much emphasis put on high fidelity motion simulation. There is no good
proof of the worth of full motion (other than the pilot's seem to like it).
If someone has a credibal study that shows otherwise I'd be interested to
see it! PC technology of today is not what it was even two years ago.
Cockpit displays can be made identical to the current aircraft, systems can
be simulated without complex mechanical devices, and, as always, PC trainers
can be used effectively for training procedures. The FAA recognizes this and
has published an advisry circluar on the use of PC training devices for
instrument training. CBT technology is on a similar path. There is no reason
why these devices should not be exploited (as long as they're exploited
correctly) for training purposes. I do endorse supervised practice if it is
to be credited towards some FAA certification requirement. As with the most
complex, high fidelity system, the training may only be effective as the
instruction that is given by a qualified individual. The FAA is unlikely to
let airmen go off on their own to practice procedures and susbsequently
credit their unssupervised practice towards some higher goal. This doesn't
diminish the possibility of "self-help" practice at home on affordable
devices, to be checked at a later time by a qualified individual.
Bottom line: anyone who is unwilling to investigate the potential of
CBT's or PC training technology is behind the times. Look past aviation for
your answers as to effectivessness. There are all sorts of complex
applications for this type of device. Aviation is not the only industry that
recognizes the potential. This should say something!

You know that little indestructable black box that is used on planes,
why can't they make the whole plane out of the same substance?
