Gerry and CRMers,

We at Ohio State are convinced of the efficacy of lost caost trainers in
teaching decision making to pilots. We are experimenting with CBTs of our
own development and CBTs in combination with off-the-shelf PC flight
simulator software. The FAA office of Aviation Medicine is supporting this
effort.

We are very skeptical about the use of PCs for teaching aircraft control but
believe that there is a lot of potential for teaching cognitive tasks
through this medium. In one recent study a subject "flying" a PC flight sim
in a LOFT session, admitted that he was reluctant to declare an emergency
because of the "paperwork that would be required."
