LOW FIDELITY AND DISTRIBUTED TRAINING

=====================================

A few ideas to add:

1. CBT by intranet is under study by most manufacturers, particularly for
recurrent technical training.

2. Virtual reality by intranet is probably next.

<underline>Against these developments:

</underline>

We at Cathay have extensive use of operationally-designed CBT (A340/A330)
in which actual checklists and company procedures are embedded with audio
of PF/PNF checklist interaction. However, feedback indicates that there
is a sensible threshold to CBT at which point trainees hunger again for a
bit of "chalk and talk" from a human instructor! The one-day ground
technical course for Cross-Crew-Qualification A330-340 vv is conducted by
an real live instructor, and receives rave reviews in our greater world
of CBT!

While part-task low-fidelity training solutions, or even tables and
chairs, can certainly be of great value with properly constructed
CRM-related scenarios, there is still nothing like the highest fidelity
available. The real sounds, tactile cockpit feel, and motion, of a
leading edge FFS (with video debriefging) provides the ultimate ground
environment for the most effective and focussed LOFT. Add to "high
reality", an effective facilitator, and this is still probably the best
brew that the industry can currently provide. Yes it costs, but its
still only a percentage of a real aeroplane, and a wise investment.

Then comes validation. An active training department needs a data base
and analysis tools to measure every part of its activity full time. Only
then can we get better solutions founded in fact.
