I REALLY like Key's three suggestions. I want to relate some experience I
have which relates to his third item, getting crews to rate video taped
crew performance.
While at Flightsafety International, Ron Brock (are you still with us here
Ron?) developed an outstanding recurrent CRM course which included exactly
such an exercise. The video used was a scripted scenario which included a
well defined set of behaviors. The class was broken into groups and given
a score sheet to help define their discussions and evaluations. After the
groups made their evaluations, the entire class discussed the results.
I had a fair amount of exposure to this exercise since we used it as part
of the initial instructor training process at FSI. In addition to building
skill in evaluating CRM for the new instructors, we demonstrated that there
can be a very high level of consistency between instructors in their
evaluation of the same level of crew performance. Nothing scientific,
understand, but a good confidence builder for the instructors and check
airmen.
