Hi John. I think the workshop is very adaptable to other arenas - just
takes a little imagination. In this CRM Developers group we have had
some marvelous discussions that compare the flight deck to the Operating
Room. Can you imagine the havoc that "gross loss of SA" would cause in
the operating room; it would be equivalent to an airliner ending up at
the wrong airport!!!

We, at Northwest, are studying the concept of "gross loss of SA" to
preclude such an event ever happening again. The SA workshop is not
designed to induce "gross loss of SA" but it does occur. So far Tony and
I have induced "gross loss of SA" twice with our SAIT exercise. The
phenomenon is real and I suspect every airline can recount a story or
two attributable to "gross loss of SA." And, with 21 years in the Navy,
I can attest that lives were lost at sea for that same reason.
