Tony Sasso and I are going to present a Situation Awareness Information
and Training (SAIT) Workshop at the Fall Education Conference of the
University Aviation Association (UAA) on September 24th in Dallas, TX.
The aim of this interactive/experiential workshop is to provide
participants with a heightened awareness of the concepts of Situation
Awareness and their relevance to crew operations. The workshop will
also give practical skills for use in guarding against the loss of
Situation Awareness during periods of distraction and high workload and
it will demonstrate a dynamic interactive approach to teaching Situation
Awareness.
The Situation Awareness Information and Training (SAIT) Workshop
originated with the Down Under gang (Brent Hayward and Company) who
presented it at the Australian Aviation Psychology Conference held at
Manly Beach, NSW in November, 1995. An updated version of the workshop
was presented at the 9th International Symposium on Aviation Psychology
held at Columbus, Ohio in April, 1997. Guy and Tony have adapted the
Australian workshop to a desktop version for instructor training at
Northwest Airlines. At the UAA Fall Conference, some of the workshop
participants will engage in a team exercise that will vividly
demonstrate certain key concepts of situation awareness: Individual
Situation Awareness, Team Situation Awareness, Mental Models, Shared
Mental Models, etc.
