the training shop's best gift to the aviators.
Evaluation is next; does every instructor and evaluator judge CRM
dynamics the same? Lots of good research is underway for "rater
reliability". Keep this up.
Jeopardy training? The original training of CRM took on the premise
that we wanted to "sell" the training, not force it. The last facilitator
class I had debated and proposed a need to do "forceful" training, in the
sense that most aviator behavior is accomplished by "must do" attitudes.
You MUST put the landing gear down before landing, and if you don't do
that in the simulator training session, you will FAIL the lesson. If CRM
behaviors were taught as a MUST do event, and graded with pass/fail
attitudes, would the CRM behavior improve? If you do not tell the PIC that
he has forgotten to complete a checklist, you will fail the lesson; and then
repeat it.

pass/fail CRM training? Does it work?

Standard disclaimer....these impressions are my own and not those of my company...blah blah ....

My company's Standards and Training organisation is pushing toward Quality Training, with the
view to buying in to an AQP style of training and assessment.With this in mind it looks like we will
be seeing CRM becoming an integral part of each aspect of technical training and assessment. CRM
behaviours are being assessed right now, and, if a recent Training Procedures Manual amendment
proposal is approved, all reference to CRM training being a "Non-jeopardy" activity will disappear.

The regulatory environment in my country is such that professional pilots have to pass a CRM exam
for initial license issue. Having on-going assessment of CRM-related behaviour seems to be a logical step.

We use Dr Helmreich's team's markers for assessment. Very early days in our assessed CRM training
, too early to comment on how it works.
