In the US, the aircraft is required to have one F/A per 50 pax, according
to FAA guidelines.
Let's face it, the airlines love this FAR/REG. As a Main Line F/A, I know
this all too well.
Most carriers rely on thier commuters and it is very cost effective to have
the A/C staffed by a single F/A. Unfortunately it is also dangerous; how
can one F/A handle a disruptive pax, or safely evacuate
the entire passenger load in an emergency? Contrary to popular belief,
we're not Superwomen.(men)
A 757 that carries 198 souls can legally leave the gate with only four
F/As. This practice leaves the F/A's well understaffed to handle an
emergency evac.
