Dr. Braithwaite,

Can you explain a little more about in-flight violence? What statistical or
anecdotal evidence is available? I'm curious what brought you into thinking
about this issue.

In-flight violence

Incidents of in-flight violence appear to be increasing, yet there appears
to be relatively little being done in terms of academic research to
determine the frequency, type of incidents and contributory factors. I may
be wrong on that and would love to hear of any research work that is
currently being undertaken around the world.

At UNSW Aviation, we are currently preparing a research proposal to look
into the subject of in-flight violence and would be keen to talk to anyone
who could help us out with ideas. We seem to have a great deal of anecdotal
evidence and would like to be able to supplement it with scientific data.

In Australia, the problem is particularly significant as international
flights tend to have ultra-long sector lengths (and anecdotal evidence
suggests a limit of about 7 hours for stressed passengers to contain
themselves) and many domestic flights carry lone flight attendants. With
the ratio of cabin crew to passengers proposed to be increased to 1:50,
there are significant flight safety issues to be tackled. In the CRM
context for example, how does a F/A utilise the resources of other
passengers or even flight crew in the event of an violent passenger?

Your thoughts, as always, would be very welcome.

Thank you
