Pilot assesment

Hello everybody,

I was wondering how air taxi, commuter and airline companies in North
America (Canada and USA) recruit and asses pilots. Do these companies have
a rigorous pilot assesment screening proces ?
Do smaller operators just select pilots on flight hours and appearance
without any testing ?

I know in my home country (Holland) are 2 organisations who are specialised
in pilot assesment. In one day they asses pilots. KLM Flight Academy uses
the assesment centre to select the best of the best candidates for a
pilot's career at KLM.
KLM uses the centre to test co-pilots for captaincy.
If you do not pass the tests you are not admitted at the KLM Flight School
or you don't become a captain.

Is there anybody who knows if they also do such rigorous pilot assesments
in North America and how they do these pilot assesments ?

Thank you for your feedback.
