CRMers:

I gave the translation service Neil Krey found a try: It is astonishingly
fast, but clearly has its limitations (I tried some German to English and
English to German):

1. The site copes well with simple sentences. A short and easy newspaper
article fairs ok; one gets the gist without being too annoyed with the
occasional mis-translations.

2. I translated the CRM-Developer Forum main page
(http://caar.db.erau.edu/crm/) into German, and that was not so great:

The grammar was clumsy, translations often had a different meaning than
intended. A few highlights:

John Wise became "the smart John" (not that he isn't that, too)

The "Industry CRM Developers Group Internet site" became "the developers
of Industry-Team-Means-of-Production grouping site on the Internet"

The "situation awareness training program" became a "training part for
circumstantial management of consciousness"

"do you have a [job] opening that you would like to fill" became something
that any native speaker would immediately understand to be "do you have a
[body] orifice that you would like to fill?"

etc.

3. A test that might be meaningful for our English native speakers came
when I retranslated the German translation into English. It didn't do the
whole thing, but the result of what it did is something that I do not want
to keep from you:

"Welcomely to the developers of the industrial crew resource
administration (CRM) Site on the Internet group. The group is a
forum for indicating necessities, coordinating processes, and
facilitating development of the airline CRM and the HF resources and - the
products.

In these Site find you a broad multiplicity of the resources, in order to
support you in the development and in the use of CRM and page courses
and in the training materials for aviation and other applications.

other information. It gives also left to the Websites of the research
institutes and the servicers of CRM and of page products.

email Vince Mancuso. If you are concerning comment or the
suggestions this web site have, email Neil Krey."

You judge for yourself...

In summary: One gets the gist, but probably not more than most people in
our field who are not native English speakers would get anyway with their
knowledge of English. And I would not trust my papers to be translated in
that way.

Best regards,

Florian Jentsch, Ph.D.
