Dear Jens,
I feel quite humble being in such illustrious company as there is on
this list. For what it is worth l would like to add my experience of
training for captaincy. As the psychologist at RAAF Base Edinburgh
(South Australia) l was involved in the development and conduct of a
Leadership course for the "Leads" (captains, TACCOS and SEMs) on the
P3C. The essential skills that we focused on were: Goal setting, Problem
solving, decision making and planning; Communicaction, Co-ordinating,
supervising and evaluating; Motivation and Counselling. We used a
combination of small group discussion, simulation exercises, written
exercises and theory. A useful article was "A Perspective on Leadership,
Management and Command" by Leutenant Colonel Boyd M Harris, Military
Review, Feb 1984.
An old article but still relevant

I am enjoying (and learning from) the discussions.

Thanks,

Jo-Anne Hamilton.
