Andrew,
Read your message with great inetrest. This is actually the reason I joined
this group, so I suppose I had better overcome my introversion (it's a
cultural thing you know <g>) and say something.
The real experts on this are the people at UT (Ashleigh are you listening?)
But here's my two fils worth. ( Current exchange rate 3.67 fils=1 US cent)
American culture can be overwhelming, pilot culture more so. Perhaps you
can try to find out where the guys you train come from (culturally
speaking) so as to be able to meet them on common ground. Try reading
Hofstede (hard going) and Trompenaars (very readable, but not the same
depth as H) for astart, if you haven't done so already. A fellow USAF/ERAU
grad student was also inetrested in the subject, his name is Dennis Dingley
(74717.215_at_compuserve.com)rank and base unknown. Dennis was going to do a
research paper on " National Culture in North Atlantic Treaty Organization
(NATO) Fighter Pilot Training". Perhaps you guys can talk.
I can send you you full citations if you need them. Would strongly suggest
you try contacting the folks at UT, either at their web page
(http://www.psy.utexas.edu/psy/helmreich/nasaut.htm) or else by phone.
Good luck,
