Dr. Jensen: you don't know me; I know you by reputation and I have
your excellent book on Pilot Judgement. Your name popped up on the
CRM forum and I am taking the liberty of writing on a slightly
different topic. Briefly, I am a USAF Pilot-Physician at Armstrongl
Lab, WPAFB, Ohio; and in some capacities the acting Chief Scientyist
for Cre Systems here. I have taken on the task of organizing the
lab's response to the USAF proposal to substitute simulation for part
of fighter pilots' proficiency flying. On the surface, this seems a
reasonable analogy to the methods used in commercial and heavy USAF
crew training - lots of sims, then go fly with passengers. I am
convinced that it is a poor analogy, that there are other dimensions
of proficiency in fighters, the psychophysiologic adaptation to the
unnatural motion and acceleration stimuli being the most obvious. To
come to the reason for this unsolicited message: We plan an Human
Systems Center meeting on this topic sometime soon, probably at the
Aircrew Training Research division at Mesa, AZ, to plan how to
demonstrate the validity, or lack thereof, of substituting ground
training for flying in fighter squadrons . But it occurred to me that
many of the experts we would want to participate would also be at your
AV Psych meeting. Is there a possibility for the addition of a half,
or even whole day, panel discussion on this topic? Thanks for
considering this request! Col Geff McCarthy PS: phone is
