Hi Greg:

I've been reading this exchange with interest, and I must agree that one
hour annually is not even close to enough. We definitely learn by doing
and also must remember that "the soul of learning is repetition". We
learn to use the skills by using them over and over. For this reason, I
recommend that all instructors must be very fluent in CRM and be able to
spot the opportunities to use the tools in simulator, academic, and
flight sessions.

As I've said in this forum before, the instructor is the key to changing
the culture of a flight operation, and it is hard to find instructors of
the caliber required to run a simulator, keep track of the scenario,
note opportunities for learning, and be able to communicate a cogent
brief and debrief. It is common in the industry to take one's best
pilots and make them instructors. Unfortunately, the qualities required
of a good instructor are not necessarily the same ones which make a good
AC, for example.

Case study exercises are excellent teaching tools, by the way. The best
way to use them is to do an Error Chain exercise, for example, and then
go to the simulator and practice. It is very revealing for a crew if
they can see links in the chain when they are flying. Video is a good
tool for this until they get the knack.

I hope that you are successful in getting more time to spend on this
subject--it would be time very well spent!
